Guided Mountain Running in the Lake District
A mountain running guide in the Lake District does one thing above all else: puts you on the right fell for the day you have actually got.
The Lake District has more good running per square mile than anywhere else in England, and more ways to have a bad day out. The weather on the tops rarely matches the valley forecast, the classic ridges are slower than their distances suggest, and half the best lines are not on any waymarked route.
Running with a guide removes all of that. You turn up, you run, and someone else has already decided which fell suits the wind, the cloud base and your legs.

| Route | Distance & ascent | What it's like |
|---|---|---|
| Fairfield Horseshoe | ~17 km / ~1,000 m | Eight summits from the middle of Ambleside. The best first fell day |
| Helvellyn and Striding Edge | ~15 km / ~900 m | Scrambling and ridge exposure with a huge summit plateau |
| Scafell Pike | ~16 km / ~1,000 m | England's highest, on rough and rocky ground |
| Lakeland Traverse 50k | ~50 km / big | Guided point-to-point ultra distance across the heart of the district |
What your guide actually does
- Picks the fell for the conditions — the single most valuable thing on a Lakeland day
- Navigates, including on the summit plateaux where people most often go wrong
- Sets the pace so the climbing does not wreck you before the descents
- Coaches on the move — descending technique, foot placement, when to hike
- Carries safety kit and first-aid cover, and holds an escape plan for every route
Hiring a running guide for your own group
If you would rather not run with strangers, we guide private days for individuals, pairs and groups — same routes, your group only, pace set entirely by you. See private guided trail running, or add days onto a weekend break.
Fitness, and what a Lakeland day really demands
Distance is not the number that matters here. A 15 km fell round with 1,000 m of climbing takes longer and costs more than a 25 km trail run at home, and the descents do more damage than the climbs. If you can run for an hour and a half on undulating ground, we can give you a proper mountain day — we just choose which one.
- A guide on every run, with route planning and navigation
- Pace grouping, so nobody is dropped and nobody is held back
- Safety kit carried by the guide, plus first-aid cover
- A personalised kit list before you travel
- Technique and pacing coaching on trail, at no extra cost
- Accommodation and transfers bundled in if you want them
Frequently asked questions
Can I hire a running guide in the Lake District?
Yes. We guide half days, full days and multi-day trips, one-to-one or for your own group, with routes chosen for your ability and the day's conditions.
How fit do I need to be for guided mountain running in the Lake District?
If you can run for about 90 minutes on undulating ground you can have an excellent day. We pick the fell to match your fitness rather than expecting you to match the fell.
What happens if the weather is bad on the fells?
The route changes, not the day. Your guide swaps exposed high ground for sheltered valleys, lower fells or woodland trails, which is most of the reason to run guided here.
Do you guide Wainwright summits and fell rounds?
Yes — from single summits to multi-summit rounds and long point-to-point days. Tell us what you want to tick off and we will build the route.
