Helvellyn via Striding Edge — Route Guide & Guided Trips

    Certified guides UK-wide Fast turnaround

Striding Edge is the most famous ridge in England, and Helvellyn behind it is one of the few Lakeland summits with genuinely runnable ground on top.

From Glenridding the climb is steady and runnable to Hole-in-the-Wall, at which point the ridge announces itself. Striding Edge is an exposed rocky arête — a scramble rather than a run, with a short awkward chimney step at the far end before the final pull to the summit plateau.

The reward is the return over Swirral Edge and Catstycam, or the long grassy descent that lets you actually run again. On a clear day you can see most of the eastern fells from the top.

    Route notes and safety

In winter this is a mountaineering route requiring axe, crampons and the skill to use them — people are injured here every year. In summer, the arête is straightforward for anyone comfortable with exposure but should never be rushed.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can you run Striding Edge?

No — the arête itself is scrambled, not run. The approach from Glenridding, the summit plateau and the descent are all runnable, which is what makes it a great mountain running day overall.

    How long does Helvellyn take?

A fit runner moving carefully over the ridge typically takes two and a half to four hours round trip from Glenridding, depending on how busy the arête is.

Is there a route up Helvellyn without scrambling?

Yes. The Thirlmere side gives a steep but non-technical ascent, and Swirral Edge is much less exposed than Striding Edge if you want a ridge without the full commitment.
