Scafell Pike Run — Route Guide & Guided Trips

    Certified guides UK-wide Fast turnaround

England's highest summit is a boulder field with a cairn on it — and the running is far better than that makes it sound, provided you pick the right approach.

The Wasdale route is the shortest and steepest: a brutal, relentless climb with very little runnable ground until you're on the summit plateau. From Borrowdale via Styhead and the Corridor Route you get a longer day with far more actual running in it, which is what most runners prefer.

The summit plateau is a chaos of boulders where the path effectively disappears. In cloud, this is one of the easiest places in England to walk off in the wrong direction — the compass bearing off the top matters more than your fitness.

    Route notes and safety

Scafell Pike and Scafell are separate mountains, separated by Mickledore and the Broad Stand — a rock climb, not a scramble. Do not attempt to link them that way. Runners link them via Foxes Tarn or Lord's Rake instead.

    Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to run up Scafell Pike?

From Wasdale Head, fit runners are usually up and down in one and a half to two and a half hours. The longer Borrowdale approach is typically three to four hours round trip.

Which route up Scafell Pike is best for running?

The Corridor Route from Seathwaite. Wasdale is faster but so steep that you walk most of the ascent; the Corridor Route gives you far more runnable ground for a similar amount of climbing.

    Do I need navigation skills?

On the summit plateau, yes. It's a featureless boulder field and cloud is common. Know how to take and follow a bearing, or go with someone who does.
