Kinder Scout Run — Route Guide & Guided Trips

    Certified guides UK-wide Fast turnaround

The highest ground in the Peak District and the start of the Pennine Way: a gritstone edge climb, a peat plateau crossing, and the best introduction to real northern moorland running there is.

Kinder is a plateau rather than a peak, and running it well is about picking lines. The edges are firm, fast and spectacular. The interior is peat groughs that can swallow a pace entirely if you drop into them at the wrong point.

Run from Edale you get the full experience: a steep climb out of the valley, miles of edge running with the whole Peak District laid out below, and a long descent back down.

    Route notes and safety

Stay on the edges unless you know the plateau — the interior groughs are disorientating in mist and exhausting in the wet. Flagstones are slippery in rain and frost. There is no shelter on top and the wind is consistently stronger than the valley forecast suggests.

    Frequently asked questions

Is Kinder Scout good for trail running?

The edges are excellent — firm, fast and with the best views in the Peak District. The peat interior is hard work and best avoided unless you know the lines.

How long does it take to run around Kinder Scout?

Two and a half to four hours for the plateau round from Edale, depending on conditions underfoot and how much you run the climb.

Can I run Kinder Scout as a beginner?

Yes, with a guide and in good conditions. It is the navigation and the ground, not the fitness, that catches people out here.
