Black Mountains Ridges Run — Route Guide & Guided Trips
The eastern side of the Brecon Beacons is ridge country: long grassy whalebacks that run for miles, with almost nothing underfoot to slow you down.
The Black Mountains are the antidote to Pen y Fan. Instead of one steep horseshoe you get a series of parallel ridges — Hatterrall, Ffawyddog, the Vale of Ewyas tops — that let you settle into a rhythm and hold it for a very long time.
That is exactly what makes them the best endurance ground in south Wales, and the reason we use them for anyone training for a mountain ultra. The climbing is front-loaded; once you are on the ridge you are running.

The route, section by section
| Section | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Valley floor to ridge | The only serious climb of the day — take it steady, it sets up everything after |
| Ridge running north | Miles of wide, grassy, genuinely fast ground with big views either side |
| The link across | A drop into the valley and a second climb; where a long day starts to feel long |
| Return ridge | Rolling tops back to the start, with a final grassy descent |
Route notes and safety
Features are few and the ridges look alike in mist, so this is the Brecon route where navigation genuinely matters. There is very little water on the tops and almost no shelter. In peat-heavy sections after rain, expect slow ground rather than fast.

Frequently asked questions
Are the Black Mountains good for long-distance running?
They are among the best in Wales for it. Long, runnable grassy ridges mean you can cover serious distance without the constant steep climbing of the central Beacons.
Do I need navigation skills for the Black Mountains?
In clear weather, no. In mist, yes — the ridges are broad and featureless, and it is easy to drop off the wrong side. This is a good route to run guided the first time.
How hard are the Black Mountains compared with Pen y Fan?
Less steep, considerably longer. Pen y Fan tests your climbing; the Black Mountains test your endurance and your pacing.
