Ben Nevis Run — Route Guide & Guided Trips

    Certified guides UK-wide Fast turnaround

The Mountain Track up Ben Nevis is the largest continuous ascent in Britain: 1,350 m of climbing from near sea level, with almost no respite once you're on the zigzags.

The path is good the whole way, which makes this an honest fitness test rather than a technical challenge. The lower section along the Red Burn is runnable, the zigzags above it are a power hike for almost everyone, and the summit plateau is boulder-strewn and often in cloud.

The descent is where the day is won or lost. It's long, stony and unforgiving on quadriceps, and most of the injuries here happen on the way down when people are tired and moving fast.

    Route notes and safety

The summit plateau has steep gullies close to the path and cloud cover most days of the year. If visibility drops, the standard navigation procedure off the summit is a specific compass sequence — know it or go with a guide. For a wilder Highland day, see our Cairngorms loop.

    Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to run up Ben Nevis?

Fit hill runners typically manage two to three hours round trip on the Mountain Track. The Ben Nevis Race record is far faster, but that is a different proposition entirely.

    Is Ben Nevis technical?

Not on the Mountain Track — it's a well-built path the whole way. The difficulty is the sheer amount of ascent and the exposure of the summit plateau to weather.

When is the best time to run Ben Nevis?

June to September. Snow can lie on the summit plateau well into early summer, and in winter the mountain is a serious mountaineering environment.
