How to Run Uphill Faster — Technique, Pacing and When to Walk
The fastest hill runners are not the ones who refuse to walk. They are the ones who know exactly where running stops paying and hiking starts.
Uphill running is an efficiency problem, not a toughness problem. Above a certain gradient, running costs far more energy than hiking for almost no extra speed — and the runners who ignore that arrive at the summit already cooked.
Everything below applies whether you're on a Peak District edge, a Lakeland fell or an alpine pass.
The technique that matters
- Shorten your stride, keep your cadence. Uphill speed comes from turnover, not reach. Long strides put you on your quads and stall you.
- Lean from the ankles, not the waist. Bending at the waist collapses your chest and costs you breathing capacity exactly when you need it.
- Look 5–10 m ahead. Staring at your feet closes the airway and hides the line.
- Drive the arms. On steep ground the arms contribute real propulsion — let them work.
- Land under your hips. Reaching up the slope in front of you is braking with extra steps.
When to walk — the honest answer

Power hiking is a trainable skill
Hands on quads just above the knee, push down on each step, big deliberate strides, upright chest. Done properly, a strong power hike is barely slower than a laboured run at a fraction of the heart rate. Practise it deliberately in training, because in a race it's what you'll use most.
Sessions that build climbing speed
- Hill repeats — 6–10 × 60–90 seconds hard uphill, jog down. Builds specific strength.
- Long climb tempo — 15–25 minutes at a controlled hard effort on a sustained climb. Teaches pacing.
- Hike-run alternations — 2 minutes hike, 2 minutes run on a steep hill. Trains the transition.
- Vertical volume — one weekly run where the ascent, not the distance, is the target.
- Strength work — step-ups, single-leg squats and calf raises. Climbing is a strength event.
Pace by effort, not by watch
Your pace on a 15% climb will be double your flat pace and that is completely normal. Watching pace on a climb makes people push into a red zone they cannot recover from. Use effort and breathing as the guide — if you can't speak three words at a time, you're going too hard for anything longer than a race finish.

Is it faster to walk or run uphill?
Above roughly 15% gradient, power hiking is usually as fast as running for most runners and costs far less energy. Below 8%, running is clearly faster. Between the two it depends on the length of the climb and how fresh you are.
Why do I get so out of breath running uphill?
Usually a combination of going out too hard and bending at the waist, which restricts your breathing. Drop the effort, shorten the stride, and keep your chest open.
How do I train for hills if I live somewhere flat?
Treadmill inclines, stairs, multi-storey car parks and bridge repeats all work. Weighted step-ups and single-leg strength work carry over more than most people expect.
Should I use poles?
On long, sustained climbs they measurably reduce leg fatigue and are worth learning to use. On short, rolling British hills they're usually more hassle than help.
