Six thousand acres of ancient woodland on the Central Line, and the best off-road running you can reach from central London without a car.
Epping Forest runs north from Wanstead almost to Epping, and it is genuinely trail running rather than park running: root, leaf litter, mud, short sharp climbs and enough tracks to run for hours without repeating yourself.
The catch is navigation. The forest looks the same in every direction and the tracks braid constantly, which is why most people run the same small loop near their entry point and never see the good bits.
The routes, compared
| Route | Distance & ascent | What it's like |
|---|---|---|
| Hollow Ponds and Leyton Flats | 5–8 km / minimal | Flattest, easiest to follow, closest to central London |
| Oak Trail, Theydon Bois | 10–11 km / modest | Waymarked circular — the best route if you are running solo |
| Chingford to High Beach | 8–12 km / rolling | Proper forest running with real climbs, from Chingford station |
| Forest north–south link | 20 km+ / rolling | Long point-to-point using the length of the forest, train at both ends |
Getting there without a car
Chingford (Overground) puts you at the southern forest edge; Loughton, Debden, Theydon Bois and Epping (Central Line) all give you direct access to the northern half. That makes point-to-point running easy — start at one station, finish at another, and never run the same track twice.
Ground conditions
Clay soil, so the forest holds water badly. From November to March expect real mud on the main rides and standing water in the low sections near the ponds. Gravel tracks stay usable year-round. In summer the ground bakes hard and the roots become the thing to watch.
Guided runs and coaching in Epping Forest
We run guided sessions and coaching here for London-based runners: route knowledge so you see the forest properly, technique work on root and mud, and progression towards longer trail days elsewhere in the UK. Half days and evenings both work.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best running routes in Epping Forest?
The waymarked Oak Trail from Theydon Bois for a self-guided 10–11 km, Chingford to High Beach for rolling forest running, and the ponds loops for a flat, easy start.
How do I avoid getting lost in Epping Forest?
Use the waymarked Oak Trail, run station to station rather than in loops, or run it once with a guide to learn the main rides.
Is Epping Forest muddy in winter?
Yes. The clay soil holds water from November to March, so use shoes with deep lugs and expect standing water in low-lying sections.
Can I get to Epping Forest by tube?
Yes — Loughton, Debden, Theydon Bois and Epping are all on the Central Line, and Chingford is on the Overground.
